Clothes Hangers and Wardrobes

Clothes hangers come with hooks, and wardrobes come with poles to hang these hooks onto. It's a simple system, so no manual is needed to explain this. However, there's nevertheless an issue related to this that warrants some attention. Which way is the right way to hang the hooks onto the poles? Is it best to hang the hangers with the hooks facing away from us or towards us?

As it turns out, the answer to this depends on the wardrobe. If we are dealing with a spacious wardrobe, the hooks of the hangers should be facing away from us. This saves us that extra move of the hand that would otherwise be required to hang the hangers onto the poles.

However, if we are dealing with a small wardrobe with a pole positioned close to its ceiling, hooks of hangers should be facing towards us. This is because there's not enough room between the pole and the ceiling of the wardrobe to allow for hangers to be lifted onto the pole. The hangers must be tilted for their hooks to slide onto the poles.

If the hooks face away from us, we have to tilt the hangers into the wardrobe in order to get their hooks onto the pole. But since the wardrobe is small and narrow, the hangers hit the back of the wardrobe. It becomes a struggle to get hangers onto the pole. The solution to this is to hold the hangers with their hooks towards us. The tilt is then out of the wardrobe, rather than into it, and there's no longer a struggle to get hangers onto the pole.

Some may find it irritating that such a simple problem has two solutions. Why not settle on one solution? If so, we must settle on the one solution that fits all wardrobes, regardless of size, and that is to hold the hooks towards us. If we do this consistently, we loose some efficiency when faced with large wardrobes, but we save ourselves the inconvenience of having to judge the size of every new wardrobe we encounter.
