The Nature of Obsessions

An obsession is by definition a single minded fixation. It's therefore close to impossible to obsess about more than one thing at a time, especially if the objects of obsession are related.

As soon as we divide our attention over more than one thing, all sorts of nuances emerge, and these nuances become especially prominent if the things under consideration can be connected. Case in point being the virus and the war in Ukraine. There's a connection between the two when it comes to how they are presented, and this would be highlighted if journalists were to focus on both at the same time. Hence, the virus had to be pushed to the background once war broke out with Russia.

The effect of this is that the virus has pretty much disappeared from the public mind. My son and I went to our local play park today, and there was hardly anyone wearing a mask. My son and I made fun of this, pointing out that the ones still wearing masks must be cold an insensitive to the suffering of Ukrainians. How selfish they appear, obsessing about their health when people are bombed and shot in the streets of Kiev.
