How to be a Libertarian

When discussing public matters, the correct position for a Libertarian is to present a private solution to the problem at hand. Libertarian principles about freedom to choose is not the right way to go, nor is a cry for lower taxes.

Case in point: A police department in America has decided to stop rescuing the lives of drug addicts who have taken an overdose of drugs.

The Libertarian position when discussing this is not to argue that the police should be free to choose what to do. Nor is the supposed tax benefits of letting drug addicts die in any way Libertarian. Saving taxes through population control is fascism of the highest order.

The correct Libertarian position is to point out that a private security company would most likely try to save as many lives as possible, for the simple reason that this would be good PR. The incentives to save lives is greater for a private company than for a public monopoly.

Private solutions yield a softer, gentler and in every way more civilized society, where empathy is rewarded and cruelty and indifference is punished. That is the argument that should be made. That's how we can win the hearts and minds of our fellow men.
