In this
one hour lecture, Halton Arp presents his controversial theory on red-shift. According to him, quasars are not extremely distant objects, but companions of galaxies. The observed red-shift is not related to distance but to the age of objects. In his explanation for this, he suggests that matter in quasars has very low mass, and that matter gains mass with age. The red-shift observed is due to the low mass of the electrons. When low mass electrons are excited, less energy is absorbed than would be the case with "normal" mass electrons, and a red-shift is observed.
The presentation of Halton Arp's theory on variable mass starts at about 48 minutes into the lecture.
